March PMQG Meeting Recap - Announcements
So was that a fun meeting or what? Wow! It was jam packed with over 100 members and guests -- our little room was bursting at the seams! It was our 3rd anniversary -- Happy Anniversary PMQG!
Membership Directory
We started with a few business announcements. Jolene Knight of Good Knight Quilts has put our first guild membership directory together. We are finalizing some details and it will be emailed out to members in the next week or so. Thank you Jolene!
Committees
Many members signed up to help with our newly formed committees. We have so much planned for this year and we will need as much help as possible! Plus it is fun to volunteer. Who knows what it will lead to (hmm, we will need new board members in 2014...!) We would love to have a member or two volunteer to help with membership. Please email or leave a comment if you are interested.
Sisters Special Exhibit
The deadline for submitting a quilt to the PMQG Special exhibit is April 1st -- which is coming right up. Unfortunately there was an error in the link to the email and if you submitted a quilt and didn't get a confirmation please resubmit it. The correct email is:

Double Date April 12th! Documentation Day and Bylaws
We still have spots available for quilts for our first PMQG Quilt Documentation Day, April 12th from 1-4pm. Fill out the form to reserve your spot and Susan Beal, our guild historian will get back to you with more information. We will also be using that space to review the first draft of our guild's bylaws which Cathy Fowler is spearheading. If you haven't filled out part two of our bylaw survey there is till time before she compiles all the information.
The location is Shaking the Tree 1407 SE Stark St. We will be heading over to Enso Winery which is across the street for happy hour around 6pm. Please join us for that too!
MQG Membership
The MQG announced at QuiltCon that it is offering guilds membership starting in July for the remaining half of 2013 or in December for 2014. There are many benefits including 501(c)3 status, a CRM website and discounts on MQG events, Our guild will review the details and vote on whether we join in July or December at our next meeting in April.
Before and After [Quilt] Market
There is lots of excitement surrounding Quilt Market, which will be in Portland this year. PMQG is teaming up with Modern Domestic to bring our members some amazing classes and possibly a party. So far we have confirmed a class with Jacquie Gering on Wednesday, May 15th and two sessions with Carolyn Friedlander on Monday, May 20th. PMQG members will get priority registration and a 10% discount. We can't wait to finalize all the details so we can share them with you!

Neon and Neutrals Challenge
We are super excited to announce our latest challenge: Neons and Neutrals sponsored by Michael Miller Fabrics. You get to create a block or accessory or both to show at our April meeting. Each member got 10 fat eights of Michael Miller solid neons, neon dots and Cotton Couture neutrals. Make sure to pre-wash the solid neons.
Guidelines:
Blocks: Make your blocks 12.5" (12" finished) by whatever your choose. We will assemble a group quilt(s) from there.
Accessories: Your choice of accessory: purse, pouch, bag, etc. -- pieced, quilted or both. This is yours to keep.
BOM
Monica Soloria-Snow (aka Happy Zombie) hosted our BOM this month. We will be making her 'Round the Rosie' block which was originally featured in Quiltmakers 100 Blocks and was recently reissued. She did a wonderful tutorial on her blog. Thank you Monica!

February 2013 Meeting Recap--Announcements
It was great to see so many members at our February meeting! It was a fun night both at our meeting and following the Instagram QuiltCon posts from our members in Austin. Just as our meeting was starting we were excited to learn that four of our PMQG members had won awards for their quilts! Congratulations to Monica Solorio-Snow (RonQuilt: The Ron Swanson Quilt, 1st Place, Piecing - Large Quilts), Heather Davidson (Retro Modern Shapes, 3rd Place, Applique - Large Quilts), Megan Dye (Trajectory #2, 1st Place, Use of Negative Space - Large Quilts), Katie Sciarrino (Hannah, 3rd Place, Modern Traditionalism - Large Quilts). Sew Days
We are thrilled to announce Brittany has scheduled monthly Sew Days for our guild on the 1st Saturday of every month at Fabric Depot. Next up: March 2nd (oops! That was last weekend! Next one is April 6th.) It is always 9am to 9pm; PMQG members are free and guests are only $10. Not sure what to sew? Bring your Puzzle Blocks or request some from Mary Ann. She has lots of projects waiting for an adoptive home.

Pencil it in!!! The 2nd annual Pacific Northwest Meet-up will take place on August 15th -18th in
February BOM Kim presented our February BOM the X Plus Block. This has been buzzing on Instagram lately and we wanted to join in the fun. Cutting details, layout diagram, tutorial and history of this block can be found on our BOM page by clicking on the block link or you can also get there from here: Feb BOM. We are also starting to see our first Bee Quilts made with our Jan BOM blocks to give. Way to go folks!
We were fortunate to have Christina Lane, aka The Sometimes Crafter, join us for a reprise of her presentation Adventures in Hexagons now re-fashioned as Adventures in English Paper Piecing. She shared many of her techniques in a detailed slide show with beautiful photographic images. Here is the link to her tutorial for how to stitch hexagons. Her first book, Quilting Happiness, which she co-authored with Diane Gilleland of Crafty Pod is coming out this summer and we can't wait to get our hands on it!
To compliment her presentation, guild members Gail Weiss (I Think Sew), Christina Camelli (A Few Scraps), Elsa Hart (A Fine Line) and Teresa Coats (Crinkle Dreams) lead small groups of members on a guided tour of paper piecing techniques. It was so much fun to learn all their different techniques and secrets! Christina has a fun paper piecing QAL on her blog: check that out here Sprockets Quilt Along. And extra points for guessing correctly who is behind that quilt block in the upper-right photo in the collage. She must have been feeling overwhelmed by the swarms of paparazzi!

Friday, April 12th, 1-6pm, happy hour afterwards. (Location is still being determined) Save the date for our first Quilt Documentation and Bylaw meeting. Susan Beal and Bill Volckening are teaming up to document and photograph your quilts. There will be a small fee of $15 per quilt to cover the costs of formally entering the quilts into the Oregon Quilt Project. You can sign up now on our new Documentation page.
With regards to our Bylaws, forty-two of you filled out our Bylaw Survey Part 1 (thank you!) and we have posted the Bylaw Survey Part 2 which will be up throughout the month of March. Your feedback is pivotal to determining the best structure for our guild and we just learned that we will be able to become a 501(c)3 thanks to the Modern Quilt Guild as soon as July, so it is also necessary in order to move forward with that! More details about that at our March meeting.

Sadly we had our first member memorial and took a moment to remember Cheryl Elgin. Her daughter and close friend were at our meeting to share Cheryl's last quilt and we were grateful for their lovely personal memories they shared with us. Peace be with the Elgin family and friends in your time of loss.

January Meeting Recap - Announcements
Where to start!? We were pleased to start our first meeting of 2013 with around 86 in attendance!
First and foremost we would like to give a big Thank You to our Board Officers from 2012! They all did such an amazing job bringing us exciting challenges, informative presentations and and wonderful opportunities to show our modern quilts at various shows!
This year we decided to approach the Meeting Recap posts a little differently. There will be three instead of one, and they will be separated into one post pertaining to announcements, tutorials and upcoming events. Another that covers the presentation of the month, and the final post dedicated solely to Show & Tell.
Without further ado, let's jump in!
Announcements
At our December meeting we raffled off these two amazing Michael Miller Block Challenge quilts and raised $500 to distribute to the two selected charities below. How awesome is that!

Our new President Michelle is spearheading a rather daunting task of drafting bylaws for our guild this year. If you are interested in joining her on this venture please shoot her an email at portlandmodernquiltguild@gmail.com. Meeting dates to discuss this further are tentatively set for the months of April and August with firm dates TBA. Meanwhile please take a minute to fill out our Bylaw Survey on Membership and Dues: this will be up throughout the month of February and is part one of several surveys we will be posting this year.

While the challenge is still open to entries until the 31st of January, a lot of our members tried especially hard to finish and bring their projects to share early at the meeting. If you want your project to be considered for display in the Michael Miller Quilt Con Booth, please post a photo to the MQG Madrona Road Challenge FINISHED flickr group The MQG guideline for this challenge are "Create the challenge you'd like with just one rule: Please only add more Madrona Road (in any color way) or solids to the projects. There's no requirement to make quilts, but since we're a quilt guild, something quilted is encouraged"

We have several upcoming events to share with you. First is the Kaffe Fasset Essay Contest. Deadline for entry was January 25th at Midnight PST. Hopefully some of our members participated!
QuiltCon is also coming up!
Speaking of QuiltCon, several of our members have been hard at work putting together the QuiltCon charity quilt. Our guild was given several blocks from the QuiltCon Block Challenge to make a quilt for the Austin Children's Shelter. Here it is in all its glory!
A BIG thank you to Heather Davidson for piecing the blocks together to make the top, to Susan Beal and Anne Whiting for collaborating and putting together the back, to Nancy Stovall for quilting it, Petra Anderson for attaching the binding, Anne Whiting for hand stitching it down, Gail Weiss for making the label and to Michelle for putting the hanging sleeve onto the back and getting it to Austin!

The turnout was so amazing I had to go to the back of the room, stand on a chair to take the picture, and it was still hard to fit everyone in!
So many beautiful quilts!!!
BOM:
A fun new activity was introduced in the form of a curated Block of the Month and corresponding Charity Quilt Drive. Each month a new BOM will be introduced and a 10 minute tutorial on how to make them will follow. Mary Ann put together a post found here with all the details! You can also find information on each month's BOM including which block is assigned to each month and a link to a tutorial under our new BOM tab!
For the month of January we presented the Scrappy Trip Around the World block by Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville. This tutorial launched over 2,000 instagram versions #scrappytripalong and you can find more links to some great blog posts on our BOM page. Teresa Coates gave a great tutorial on how these blocks can be quickly put together!

Sew Days:
Our first sew day is Saturday, February 2nd at Fabric Depot. This fun event is free for members and $10 for non-members (although we are happy to register you at the event if you decide to join!) Don't forget to bring your Puzzle Blocks!

Six Charity Bees formed at the meeting including: 2 Bee or not 2 Bee, Our Hearts Belong to the Kids, CBGBee, Bee Brave. That means we need a minimum of 54 blocks so these bees can make their quilts! If you want to host a bee or join one we encourage you to start a flickr discussion on the PMQG flickr group.

Sew Day - Saturday
Get those Holiday projects ready and come on out to Sew Day at Fabric Depot this Saturday, Dec. 1st from 9am - 9pm. Irons, ironing boards, and cutting mats are provided. Please bring everything else you'll need for a fabulous day of sewing!
Also, I'm excited to announce that our Michael Miller Collaborative Quilt - Graphic won our poll and will be entered into the Quilt Con show. Thanks to over the 130 people who voted!

We are excited to announce that we're bringing back Sew, Swap, & Sell! We'd love to have you bring any fabrics you've fallen out of love with to swap or sell. Need to de-stash? We want your fabrics! If you would like to sell, please make sure you have marked and assigned a value to your fabrics to avoid confusion. Got a project you no longer love? Bring it and swap it? Maybe someone else will be the fresh eye to get it finished.

Who? All PMQG Friends!
When? Sunday, October 7th 11am - 4pm
What? To sew, swap, sell, or if you just want to come by and chat, that's great too!
Where? Staver Locomotive 2537 NW 29th Ave. Portland, OR 97210
How? Because we will be limited on space, you must reserve your space by simply filling out the form below. Sewing machine space is limited, I'll make a note here on this post when sewing spaces are full, it's first come first serve on the google doc. Feel free to bring a quilt to bind!
What to bring:
- Finger food/small dish to share for lunch
- Fabric to swap/sell
- All sewing supplies that you'll need for your sewing project (please rsvp ahead of time!) Irons & ironing boards stations will be provided by board members.

Michael Miller Stripe Challenge
Following the success of our last challenge, the PMQG will again be teaming with Michael Miller Fabrics to showcase their new Stripes Collection.
“Stripes”
is a collection of large and small-scale stripes and chevrons.
MM signature rich colors and an unusual blend of scale make these
essential stash fabrics worthy of stealing the show!
Since
we’ll take any excuse to play with new fabric, we’re happy to announce
the STRIPES!!!! Home Dec Challenge.
The
Juicy Details:
1)
Paid members will be able to choose between the warm or cool colorway
and a bundle of coordinating solids. You can mix in additional
cotton couture solids, but please, no additional prints. The
stripes should be the focus of your design.
2)
When you’ve picked your bundle, get to brainstorming! We’ve decided
to ask that you create something in the home dec category, and the
more creative your use of the stripes, the better! We’d love to see
what new patterns and designs emerge once you start slicing and dicing! For example, bags,
mug rugs, wall hangings, table runners, pillows, storage bins,
cozies, etc.
3)
Once all of the items are finished, we’ll collect them at the October
meeting or drop them off at Nancy's Studio before hand. Then, we'll photograph them and he folks at Michael Miller will select their favorite pictures (and possibly some of their favorite items!!)
to showcase in their booth at the Fall Quilt Market.
