What We're Making

Blocks for quilts to raffle at the holiday party in December. All members will get the chance to win one of these quilts! 

What You'll Get

Participants will receive four fat quarters of Haven fabric. 

The Blocks

You'll make one (or more!) of the following blocks: 

*  Flower Path Quilt Block by Ellen Luckett Baker (courtesy of Kristin at Sew Mama Sew)

*  Ohio Star by Tessa at The Sewing Chick Blog (courtesy of Tessa)

*  Modern Improv Block: Make your own block design, just make sure at least ONE side is 12.5" unfinished.

Adding Fabrics

Do not add any other prints.

You may add the following Kona Cotton solids:

Yellows: lemon buttercup, canary

Pink: Medium pink, carnation, peony

Red: Coral

Gray: Iron, medium gray

Due Date

Participants must commit to making at least one block and returning it to the guild by August 31. If you don't make a block, you must return the fabric to the guild by August 31. You can give your block or fabric to one of the officers at any PMQG event in August. 

Who Can Participate

You must sign up for this challenge. We have fabric for 80 people. You must be a current PMQG member to participate. 

(PMQG membership is $40. If you're a member of the national Modern Quilt Guild but not PMQG, you can upgrade for $15. Email the guild at portlandmodernquiltguild@gmail.com for details.)

The challenge: 

Option 1: Make anything quilted that you like! We're keeping this nice and easy. No restrictions or guidelines other than the fabric guidelines below and it must be quilted. Quilts, bags, wall hangings, anything you are inspired to make is allowed! You may add solids from any manufacturer, and/or Michael Miller prints.

Option 2: Alternately, you may make a block or blocks to give to the guild to be used in some of our yearly raffle quilts. For these blocks the only additional fabrics allowed are solid fabrics (no additional prints so the blocks can be cohesive). The block size is up to you as long as one measurement is 12.5 inches. So 12.5" x 6.5" is allowed, as are 12.5" x 12.5" and 12.5" x 18.5." Please bring these blocks to June's meeting.

The fabrics: Michael Miller Petal Fat Quarters fabrics that were handed out at April's meeting. There are a limited amount that may still be available at the next guild event(s). You don't have to use all of the fabrics. You may also add in any solid from any manufacturer. If you are doing option 1, you may also add in any Michael Miller print.


Who can enter: This challenge is MQG-wide. PMQG members who receive a fabric pack may enter, and MQGs all over will be doing similar challenges

Finishing Details for Glitz Challenge

Here are the final things you will need to know to enter your Michael Miller Glitz mini quilts for the PMQG Quilt Knit Stitch exhibit.

• Labeling Information: All quilts must be labeled: A cloth label with the title of the quilt and your name, address, and telephone number must be sewn on the back of the quilt. The information on the label can be applied with embroidery or any other permanent means.  Do not use a water-soluble pen.
• Hanging sleeve information: All quilts must have a hanging sleeve. Find information on how to add a hanging sleeve here.
• Please take pictures of your quilt before you submit them to PMQG. If your quilt is chosen, you will then need to fill out an online form with info about you/your quilt and include a picture.

Remember, these quilts are due at the April PMQG meeting.  If you cannot bring them to the April meeting or send them with a friend, you may hand them off to an officer at the April 26th Fabric Depot Sew Day (9am-9pm)

FYI, the Robert Kaufman Modern Metallic Quilts will have the same label and hanging requirements, but the entry process is different.

Upcoming Challenges and Exhibits

At Tuesday's meeting we introduced a new Mini Quilt Challenge that ties into our Quilt Knit Stitch! exhibit, as well as a second way to enter the exhibit. Also this week you may have heard about the newest MQG Challenge that is coming up. I know that's a lot of information to throw at you all at once, so here's further explanation for all of these things:

Michael Miller Glitz Modern Mini Quilt Challenge

The challenge: Make a modern mini quilt with your Glitz fabrics that has dimensions that are in between 12" x 12" and 24" x 24." So, any single side is at least 12 and up to 24. It can be rectangular or round or any other shape as long it is smaller or equal to 24" x 24."

The sponsor: Michael Miller Fabrics

The fabrics: Michael Miller Glitz fat eighth fabrics you received at Tuesday's meeting. You may also add in any Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids. No other fabrics allowed. If you missed that meeting we have a limited number you may pick up at the upcoming Open Sew days at Fabric Depot or March's meeting. First come, first serve.

Who can enter: Any PMQG 2014 member who receives a fabric pack

Entry Details: Enter the challenge by bringing your mini quilt to the PMQG April meeting. If you cannot make the meting, please make arrangements for a friend to take it for you. Quilts that are not chosen to appear in the Quilt Knit Stitch! exhibit will be returned at May's meeting.

The challenge: Create a quilt that is maximum size 48" x 48" that features metallics: in fabric, thread, theme, etc. Interpret the metallic challenge as you see fit!

The fabrics: Members can receive 3 Fat Quarters of Robert Kaufman metallics fabrics. However, you may make a quilt that does not include these fabrics to enter into the exhibit. Fabrics will be passed out at an upcoming meeting after they are received by the officers.


Who can enter: Members of PNW guilds and MQG individual members who live in the PNW

Entry Details: Quilts must be submitted to the Quilt Knit Stitch staff for consideration in this exhibit by May 2, 2014. Please see the exhibit page for full details on how to submit and other dates.

PMQG Doll Quilt Fundraiser for Oregon Ballet Theater

Hey PMQG - we are so excited about the Doll Quilt Challenge! We presented this at our meeting last week after a fun historic look at antique doll quilts put together for us by historian and collector Jan Gessin. After the presentation we were joined by Kristen Knapp of OBT who gave us some background on George Balanchine's The Nutcracker .

Guidelines:

1. Use one or more colors in our 'Land of Sweets' Color Palette.
2. Use Shannon Fabrics 'Cuddle' for any other special details on the front or the back of your quilt. (We will give you a FQ of Cuddle for one or more quilts while supplies last)
3. Use 100% cotton for additional piecing: solids or modern prints. Please no batiks, licensed character, thematic prints or historic reproduction prints.
4. Doll quilt sizes: no smaller than 12" x 16" and no larger than 18" x 22"
5. Bring to a PMQG meeting on or before our November 2013 meeting.

PMQG Neon Quilt at Quilt Market

Congrats PMQG for getting the opportunity to show this quilt in the Michael Miller booth at Quilt Market last weekend! It looks wonderful next to Elizabeth Hartman's Neon Honey Quilt!

Amber Wilson, your illustrious PMQG secretary pieced the top and the back, Kim Lumapas, your dedicated PMQG programs director attached the binding, and PMQG Business member and 2012 PMQG treasurer, Nancy Stoval of Just Quilting quilted it!

We have two more neon quilts in progress and can't wait to bring them to show and tell. You should all be VERY proud of your work! This was a challenge that was a bit daunting for most of us and we did good! The Michael Miller crew was delighted and asked us to participate in another challenge. Stay tuned for more info on that!

April Meeting Recap: Announcements

What a fun PMQG meeting we had on April 18th! The room was packed, the energy was high and there were many new faces. About halfway through the meeting, Anne, our treasurer, whispered to me that we had just signed up our 150th member. 150! How cool is that!

Community Events:
Our next PMQG Sew Day will be held on Saturday, May 4th at Fabric Depot from 9am - 9pm. PMQG Members are free, Guests are $10.
Our first Charity Sewcial is on Friday, May 10th at Modern Domestic from 5-8pm hosted by Rachel Kerley. PMQG Members can participate in a free charity pillow sewing event (all supplies provided) or sew their own projects for $10 (machines and tools provided). 

Quilt Shows: 
Thank you to everyone who submitted quilts for the PMQG special exhibit at Sisters. Notification letters were sent out on April 9th. The deadline to submit a quilt to the general Sisters show is June 1st.

The deadline for HMQS has been extended through April 26th. 

Historian Report:
Our first PMQG Quilt Documentation Day was held on April 12th from 1-4pm. We documented ten quilts, several of which were the first modern quilts to be documented for this project. Thank you to Susan Beal and Bill Volkening for spear heading these efforts.

Bylaws
We held a bylaw meeting on April 12th and reviewed the bylaw surveys and a working draft of bylaws for our guild. The next bylaw meeting will be announced. Please email us with Bylaw in the subject line if you would like a pdf of the document that we reviewed. A comment form is available on the Bylaw page of this blog.

MQG Membership
Allisa Haight Carlton will host a presentation on MQG membership at our May Meeting. Please send any questions about MQG membership to portlandmodernquiltguild (at) gmail (dot) com with the subject line MQG Membership in advance of this meeting.

Before and After [Quilt] Market with Modern Domestic
We raffled off a class at Modern Domestic and will donate the proceeds to the Leiomyosarcoma Direct Research Foundation in honor of Heather Grant.
We are planning a Meet and Greet on Friday May 17th at Modern Domestic. Stay tuned for more details about that.
There are still spots available in Carolyn Friedlander's Ariel Wall Hanging and Olive Wall Hanging classes on Monday May 20th and Jacquie Gering's Slice and Insert Improv class on Wednesday May 15th. PMQG members get a 10% discount.

PNCA + PMQG team up
We have partnered with PNCA on two fantastic weekend workshops June 29-30. PMQG members get priority registration and a $100 discount off the cost of these classes. Neon and Neutrals Challenge
Our latest challenge was a Neons and Neutrals sponsored by Michael Miller Fabrics. Each member got 10 fat eights of Michael Miller solid neons, neon dots and Cotton Couture neutrals and was challenged to make a 
block or accessory. Members showed their pieces at our meeting (see photo above the blocks!) Stay tuned for next steps.

BOM
PMQG member Heather Davidson hosted our BOM this month. We will be making her 'Spring Mod' block along with the Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild. She did a wonderful tutorial on her blog. Thank you Heather!

March PMQG Meeting Recap - Announcements

So was that a fun meeting or what? Wow! It was jam packed with over 100 members and guests -- our little room was bursting at the seams! It was our 3rd anniversary -- Happy Anniversary PMQG!

Membership Directory
We started with a few business announcements. Jolene Knight of Good Knight Quilts has put our first guild membership directory together. We are finalizing some details and it will be emailed out to members in the next week or so. Thank you Jolene!

Committees
Many members signed up to help with our newly formed committees. We have so much planned for this year and we will need as much help as possible! Plus it is fun to volunteer. Who knows what it will lead to (hmm, we will need new board members in 2014...!) We would love to have a member or two volunteer to help with membership. Please email or leave a comment if you are interested.

Sisters Special Exhibit
The deadline for submitting a quilt to the PMQG Special exhibit is April 1st -- which is coming right up. Unfortunately there was an error in the link to the email and if you submitted a quilt and didn't get a confirmation please resubmit it. The correct email is:

Double Date April 12th! Documentation Day and Bylaws
We still have spots available for quilts for our first PMQG Quilt Documentation Day, April 12th from 1-4pm. Fill out the form to reserve your spot and Susan Beal, our guild historian will get back to you with more information. We will also be using that space to review the first draft of our guild's bylaws which Cathy Fowler is spearheading. If you haven't filled out part two of our bylaw survey there is till time before she compiles all the information.
The location is Shaking the Tree 1407 SE Stark St. We will be heading over to Enso Winery which is across the street for happy hour around 6pm. Please join us for that too!

MQG Membership
The MQG announced at QuiltCon that it is offering guilds membership starting in July for the remaining half of 2013 or in December for 2014. There are many benefits including 501(c)3 status, a CRM website and discounts on MQG events, Our guild will review the details and vote on whether we join in July or December at our next meeting in April.

Before and After [Quilt] Market
There is lots of excitement surrounding Quilt Market, which will be in Portland this year. PMQG is teaming up with Modern Domestic to bring our members some amazing classes and possibly a party. So far we have confirmed a class with Jacquie Gering on Wednesday, May 15th and two sessions with Carolyn Friedlander on Monday, May 20th. PMQG members will get priority registration and a 10% discount. We can't wait to finalize all the details so we can share them with you!

Neon and Neutrals Challenge
We are super excited to announce our latest challenge: Neons and Neutrals sponsored by Michael Miller Fabrics. You get to create a block or accessory or both to show at our April meeting. Each member got 10 fat eights of Michael Miller solid neons, neon dots and Cotton Couture neutrals. Make sure to pre-wash the solid neons.
Guidelines:
Blocks: Make your blocks 12.5" (12" finished) by whatever your choose. We will assemble a group quilt(s) from there.
Accessories: Your choice of accessory: purse, pouch, bag, etc. -- pieced, quilted or both. This is yours to keep.

BOM
Monica Soloria-Snow (aka Happy Zombie) hosted our BOM this month. We will be making her 'Round the Rosie' block which was originally featured in Quiltmakers 100 Blocks and was recently reissued. She did a wonderful tutorial on her blog. Thank you Monica!

Presentations: Kimberly and Amber will have a fun presentation on pieced quilt backs, we will introduce a new Block of the Month Program, and we will also share some charity quilting ideas!

Madrona Road Challenge: Don't forget to bring your Madrona Road finished mini quilts to the meeting to share in the group picture! If you have not received your fabric yet and you signed up originally or were on the wait list, we will have fabric for you at the meeting. We may have a few extra sets for other paid members who are interested in doing the challenge.  Violet Craft, designer of Madrona Road,  will be at the meeting to talk about the challenge and answer any questions.

Charity Idea: If you've lost your quilty mojo on a project, never finished it, and kinda don't want to look at it anymore, please consider donating it for one of our new charity programs! We'll discuss this more at the upcoming meetings, but anytime during the year feel free to bring in orphan blocks, partially finished tops, and any coordinating fabric that might go along with it.

Sew Day: Save the date for our first Sew Day of the year! February 2nd at Fabric Depot, starting at 9:00 am!


Bradley Angle House: We will be accepting donations of fabric and other sewing/quilting supplies for Bradley Angle House. If you have anything you will not use, now is a great time to share it with someone who can!

Madrona Road Challenge

We are really excited to launch the Madrona Road challenge hosted by the National Guild and Michael Miller! As a guild and along with Violet Craft we have assembled an exciting challenge for you, here are the guidelines:
UPDATES 1/10/12 Projects that are posted to the MQG Madrona Road Challenge Flickr Pool by Thursday January 31st will be considered for the Michael Miller Quilt Con Booth. Please do not email the guild your photos as previously requested. Thanks and Good Luck!


As Violet was inspired by her story, we'd like each of you to make a wall or art quilt inspired by a word or story.

• Smaller than 36 inches on any sides. 
• Must include Madrona Road, you may add any solids that you like.
• Include the word that inspires this quilt. Could be pieced within the quilt, appliqued, embroidered, quilted, any technique that you would like to try :) 
• Please post your progress photos & finished photos within the MQG Madrona Road Challenge Flickr Pool, (feel free to add it to our PMQG flickr pool too!)
• If you did not get fabric, but would like to participate in this challenge, we will have a few more sets available at the January meeting, however, feel free to get started if you have your own Madora Road fabric. 
• Deadline: If you'd like your quilt to be considered for the Michael Miller booth at QuiltCon, you must send us (portlandmodernquiltguild at gmail dot com) a photo of your completed quilt by Tuesday, January 29th. Also, please bring your quilt (or work in progress) to the January meeting, on January 21st.

October Guild Meeting

Our October meeting was bursting at the seams as usual! Petra was able to catch a few photos of the crowd, so many friendly faces! :)

We will have a poll on this blog soon, asking everyone to vote for which quilt should be entered in the QuiltCon collaborative quilt category.
